About this object
Title in circular area top left corner. In lower left corner; "Ostliche Lange von Greenwich". Map features Australia, South West Pacific and Indonesia, extending from China in the top left to the Marquessas on the right. "Neu Holland" in lower left quarter with Tasmania depicted as an extension of "Neu Sud Wallis" hypothetically joined to Australia. "Van Diemens Land" is clearly written below the promontory. Tracks and dates of explorers are noted including Mendana 1568, Tasman 1642, Cook 1777, Furneaux 1773, Wallis 1767, Byron 1765, Bougainville 1769 and Shortland 1788. There is considerable detail about Dutch discoveries of particular places and areas, for instance, "Roltenest I" and "Peter Nuyts Land". Comment: This map displays impressive accuracy in its depiction of New Zealand and the known coastlines of Australia. There is a comprehensive amount of detailed information, but while Tasman's, Furneaux's and Cook's tracks south of Tasmania are shown, it omits early Dutch explorers routes for "New Holland"
