Seventy autograph letters, signed by Jacob Bauer, from 4 August 1850 - 11 April 1865.
The collection includes 3 letters from Metz (4 August 1850 to 19 October 1850), 11 letters from Brighton (21 February 1852 to 26 April 1853), 6 letters from London (12 May 1853 to 6 July 1853), 1 letter from the ship "Rekrut" (10 July 1853), 46 letters from Melbourne (25 October 1853 to 20 February 1864), 2 letters from Adelaide (23 April 1864 and 27 October 1864), and 1 letter from Palmerston, Northern Territory (8 and 11 April 1865); an unsent letter from Susanna Schmahl, Bauer's mother, dated 1 September 1863 to Jacob Bauer, his wife and son; a newspaper cutting dated 26 June 1859 of Bauer's report from the Flagstaff Observatory. Also includes a typescript of the transcription of the letters and a partial translation into English.
