This collection contains the personal papers of Arnold Stein (1890- 1974) and his son, Werner A. Stein (1925-2017), who fled Berlin, Germany in 1939 with Arnold’s wife Gertrude and daughter Marianne. - The collection includes correspondence and other original materials, documenting Arnold’s printing business in Berlin; WWI German army service; and the family’s emigration from Germany. Also documented are Werner’s schooling; US army service; and his longtime involvement with the German-Jewish newspaper Aufbau. The collection also includes documentation on Stein, Rosenthal and Marcus genealogy and family history.

In 1939, Arnold Stein was forced to sell his business to Otto Conrad. The family left Germany on July 29, 1939 and arrived in London August 12th. Their belongings were shipped to Australia, but because of the war the ship returned with its cargo to Hamburg. This loss and the forced sale of the printing business resulted into an extended correspondence into the 1970s on issues of restitution.
