Short description
Panayiotis Kritikos (Paul Cretan) was born in Milopotamos on the island of Kythera, Greece, in 1894. As a boy, (possibly age 12), he emigrated to America where he worked as a waiter in a large hotel. Some time later, he joined his father Constantine who had emigrated temporarily to Australia and together they ran a fruit shop in Cooma, NSW. Paul returned to Greece at the time of the First World War, and he served in the Greek army in the war with Turkey 1918-19.

In 1924 he married Sophia Leontsinis, at the Greek Orthodox Church in Burke Street, Surry Ηills and they had seven children: Efrosini, Constantine, Emmanuel, George, Katerina, Nicholas, and James.

After years in Queanbeyan, and some coffee shops in his opposition, he decided to seek opportunities for business in other towns. He moved to Glandstone with his family, then to Bathurst, and to Blayney, finally returning to Queanbeyan in the early thirties.
